Many thanks both for your helpful responses. I think I will go ahead and get a DAC and try out JRiver. I have signed up for the free sampler from HD tracks to see how the sound quality stacks up against my Quad CDP2 (plus Temple Audio Gold power amp, Spendor SA1s and REL sub).

    First DAC

Many powered USB hubs also do not work with ios devices and the camera connection kit...I know this from personal experience...they are not all the same. Far better to use an IOS compatable DAC in the first place and avoid adding something else into the signal path, particularly if it is a cheap...

    What is a powerful amp?

I would say that a 500 watt amp to drive normal speakers would be a total waste of power. I run Spendor SA1s, with only 85 dB per watt efficency with a 25 watt amp, and it will go louder than comfortable for my ears with no distortion. I have an excellent CD playing system but feel, after more than 30 yrs in HiFi, I am missing out on discovering new artists, and perhaps hearing music that is better than CD. (I started with a Rega/Cyrus/Linn vinyl playing system, and CDs sounded better to me, when I had the hearing to know the...
