    blu ray player

The PS4 reportedly had trouble deinterlacing 1080i content and some DVD upscaling problems, I think these issues have been resolved now.

    β22 Headphone Amplifier ~ Build Log ~

I am currently populating boards for a balanced/bridged version of this amp. The plan is to match and install all the transistors over the next week or so and then start testing and troubleshooting. Hopefully this build will be less :help: and more

Sony DVP NS900V not reading SACD, any advice ??

You can't pass DSD via optical unfortunately, it's a restriction of the SACD format, PCM only.

PS Vita Slim coming to UK

In direct comparison, the LCD is certainly a downgrade, with noticeably worse black levels and a yellowy cast to the colours. But it's still a very good screen and arguably easier on the eyes over long periods of time. I own both models and much prefer the form factor of the slim, I'm quite...

What were your hifi and electronic gadget purchases of 2013?

Haven't spent money like this for a few years, firstly the audio stuff. Styleaudio Carat-Topaz Dac/Amp Grace m903 HDP Sennheiser HD800 Headphones Aurisonic ASG-2 IEMs Sony NW-ZX1 DAP Also this year saw me getting back into gaming after a ten year hiatus... PS3 Slim - Originally purchased...

Pot in the signal path . . .

Those ALPS pots are known to develop noise over time, they can also be a cause of hum issues. I much prefer the little TKD pots over them, even though they're more expensive.

    Demoing and the mere-exposure effect

Psychology is a soft, some would say, pseudo science, meaning that there is little in the way of evidence that a lot of the theories it posits with are actually provable. I'm not dismissing it out of hand, but I really have trouble buying some of these ideas, especially the whole subconscious...

    DVD-A playback

You can play the 24bit/48khz LPCM and surround tracks, if available, on your DVD player but you'll need a DVD-A compatable machine for the higher resolution content.

Decware Zen Head stereo headphone amp - review

Built a variant of this design a while ago and thought the crossfeed, compared to the tangent/meier implementations, to be pretty successful. I like the way certain instruments/vocalists sort of step out the mix - it certainly does munch batteries though.

    β22 Headphone Amplifier ~ Build Log ~

Going to wrap this project up but lastly I'm going back to discuss the casework. I wasn't terribly happy with the way the enclosure turned out to be honest. The side cheeks were destined to be eventually replaced at some time, which they recently were, but the top panels looked poor. The 3mm...

    β22 Headphone Amplifier ~ Build Log ~

Since July 2011 I've tried a few different volume controls, initially an ALPS "Blue Velvet" pot was used for the first couple of weeks, then later installed the rather more expensive Khozmo 48-step attenuator. I did notice an improvement in sound quality, the ALPS adds some colouration to the...

    β22 Headphone Amplifier ~ Build Log ~

I can't find the sodding backup disc with pictures and notes concerning the next part so I'm just going to mention an important factor when dealing with transistors in general. As the gain of transistors varies not only across different brands and models but between the actual units themselves...

Thanks bigboss! I don't know the exact cost but a rough guess would be around the £500 to £600 region.

    β22 Headphone Amplifier ~ Build Log ~

I know this is an old thread but as this project is now officially completely finished (hurrah!) I thought that it was high time we had an update. The amp has been functioning happily since July 2011, unfortunately a combination of problems with the build and life in general getting in the way...

    β22 Headphone Amplifier ~ Build Log ~

Time for some pretty pictures and my first bodge. Test fitting of the three amp boards, it's a bit tight in there... This is what happens when you don't think things through properly, the case is obviously too small, there isn't sufficent space for proper ventilation. This isn't a complete...
