Have you tried using different software to rip?
Exact Audio Copy is highly favoured by audiophiles as it is more accurate than most CD rippers and has extra features to enable you to clean up glitches.
Thanks guys, I suspected as much. I'm not afraid of wireless but didnt think it would get thru floors so I'm encouraged by your experience. Currently only at the stage of researching NAS options, but might take up your offer down the track. Cheers :)
With all the discussion in these forums about power conditioners and the quality of mains power affecting audio quality, I wonder if anyone has any knowledge/experience of whether running ethernet over mains would degrade or interfere with the quality of mains supply to audio gear?
External DACs dont have to be expensive. I use the SUPER Pro DAC 707 USB with my laptop which I think gives excellent sound quality for the price - barely distinguishable from my CD player. USB transfer speed is not an issue for audio playback.
Haven't heard Holly Cole, but I have the Claire Martin CD, and I think it is rendered with splendid clarity (like the other Linn recordings I have) and is a great album to boot. I suspect perhaps we are inclined to become conditioned to the mediocre recording quality of the majority of CDs to...

I havent compared it to any other DACs so I cant comment on that, but what I can say is that it makes my laptop and my $100 Pioneer DVD sound *almost* as good as my Arcam...
Speaker magnets only cause *interference* if placed too close to picture tubes - there is no risk of permanent damage. So just place them far enough away so that the picture looks ok.
