With your budget I would suggest Marantz PM66KI. PM66KI is better than PM66SE or PM66 due to better components being used.

Just to share my personal impression about LCD headphones. During the last X'mas I had an audition the 3 LCD heaphones, i.e. LCD-3, LCD-X and LCD-XC. After the audition I bought LCD-X instead of LCD-3 that I initially had in mind. LCD-X has better sound staging though not as good as HD800...

The display is powered by the 7918 voltage regulator. It seems that there is no power to the front display panel. You may wish to check the voltage of the 7918 and see if you get a -18V from it. Most likely this regulator is burnt.

Yes, you are right LCD-X is HUGE and HEAVY and I also don't like its look but it sounds really wonderful. If you prefer somethig light then go for Senn HD800 which is also not make in China. I got two pairs of HD800s at home in additional to LCD-X

IMHO irrespective of places of manufacturing of any products it is the QC that controls the quality of the final product. If a brand is manufactured in somewhere outside its origin that brand has the responsibility to ensure the QC is carried out properly in accordance with their standards...

Yes this combination cannot be wrong :) I got Tucanna II with Spendor SA-1 plus sub-woofer which has very similar sound quality.
