That's not a bad position but I missed something in your OP that's pertinent. Since you're happy with CD playback but Apple Music via Airport Express sounds flat I'd suggest you try a different streaming solution that doesn't involve Airport Express. It looks like it could be the culprit.

Balanced connection is better but only if you connect to balanced monitors. With your setup (unbalanced) it makes no difference.

Yeah, my bad. Just noticed you couldn't go balanced. If it was possible I still would as many USB interfaces will transfer a lot of noise from PCs when used un balanced. I know my Audient ID14 does, so that would be preferable for me even for short runs.
