It's an AV receiver but I run it in "straight" mode, so yes it's in 2-channel when listening to tidal/Spotify etc. It sounds good without eq (Yamaha calls it "through" mode) but given the constraints of the room I can imagine some correction would yield benefits. I might be falling into the...

The FL placement is compromised by its proximity to the wall, an issue the FR doesn't have, i really have no other option in this regard. Thanks very much for the advice, I'm happy enough with the sound in "through" mode, I'm likely agonising over it too much.
