New 4K player vs upscaling Bluray player

Initial impressions are limited as the UHD discs were not in the box; Samsung say they will arrive within 30 days :-( The picture is an improvement, but that is down to the TV. When I have the UHD dics I'll do some testing with both players and a variety of discs and post the outcome. One...

New 4K player vs upscaling Bluray player

Thanks. I've decided to keep it. I'm sure I'll be very happy with it; differences are probably only noticeable in direct comparisons and in combination with the new TV it will be better than my current set-up.

    Panasonic Blu Ray 4K

The DMPUB900 is now available for just £350 brand new (PRC). I'd go for that one; only the Oppo is marginally better (according to reviews) but not worth nearly twice the price. I'd be buying one if I hadn't been offered a new Samsung 8500 with 3 films for £140. Unless money is no object, you...

New 4K player vs upscaling Bluray player

Done a little testing. A BDT310 (itself an award winner several years ago) playing a blu-ray vs the BDT700 upscaling the same film on DVD. Amazingly, the BDT700 upscaling the DVD looks almost as good as the BDT310 playing the blu-ray. The BDT700 playing a blu-ray was a significant improvement...

New 4K player vs upscaling Bluray player

I have a new Samsung UE55KS7000 arriving tomorrow; the latest deals finally pushed me into upgrading. There was an excellent offer to buy the K8500 UHD player with it for £140, which I took. This seems worthwhile, especially as it comes with 3 good UHD films. However, watching 'The Dark...

Disappointing Sound Quality from Ripped CDs

The M51 Dac has digital volume control that works without affecting sound quality. I set the Sonos to use it's own volume control for convenience to use with apps, so it was set to whatever level the listener required; it's easy to switch on and off, so when convenience more important than...

Disappointing Sound Quality from Ripped CDs

Thanks for all the suggestions; the problem was the Sonos volume control. I switched this to fixed and it's hard to hear much difference. I only played one track, but that's all it took to confirm the problem. I still think the Transport was marginally better, but I would have to play a lot...

Disappointing Sound Quality from Ripped CDs

Any know if there's a way to play the rips without the Sonos? Can I feed the Synology directly to the DAC. it does have it's own music management system? Regarding the levels, that's definately not the problem; the difference in the musicality, soundstage and depth were far too significant.

Disappointing Sound Quality from Ripped CDs

Any CD Transport may be capable of reading the CD perfectly, but the sound can get appreciably better with more expensive Transports. I remember being amazed at the improvement from adding a PSX-R external power supply to a Cyrus Transport. As the CDs were ripped perfectly (well nearly all of...

Disappointing Sound Quality from Ripped CDs

Thanks for the suggestions; I'll try them out when I can; probably tomorrow and report back. One thing I've always wondered is whether a rip could be as good as a high end CD Transport, for the simple reason that reading a CD on a computer drive can't be as good as a dedicated CD Transport, or...

Disappointing Sound Quality from Ripped CDs

After much research I decided to rip all my CDs (using dbpoweramp), expecting the sound quality to be near comparable to playing CDs. The files are ripped in flac5 and stored on a Synology NAS drive. The files are streamed through a Sonos Connect through the digital connection using a van den...
