I came very late to computers.
My first, a well-below £300 Lenovo laptop, has worked well enough for 10 years.
Anything other than hi-fi, I only ever change when absolutely forced to.
I am sure that I wouldn't - because I value (and have paid for) perfectly good boxes.
Apart from any anti-clutter aspect, one-box systems make more sense for those starting out with nothing.
Even then, as mentioned above, any necessary repair is likely to have more inconvenient and expensive...
Don't worry, I've never bought a full-priced item in HMV 👍 - and I'm pretty sure all of my vinyl has been bought from elsewhere.
Whatever the reasons (or excuses) for the current cost of vinyl - I'm happy not to be buying it.

I wish I hadn't - and so does he).
I know you said the noise is through the audio outputs - and not on Bluetooth - in which case a fault...
My Sennheiser HD-560S are a good compromise of 120 ohms - working well direct from a phone, laptop or from headphone amplifiers.
(At full (£169) price they're a bargain - but currently available for £99).
When reading through the specifications, for what it's worth, note the quoted sensitivity...
I take all the points you make.
I'm pleased to say there are very few (if any) snobs on this forum - just people that give realistic and honest advice.
After all, I don't consider you a snob for telling him to avoid Crosley 😉👍
You point out that he might be on a very tight budget.
If that's...
That's all well and good - maybe if someone already has a fairly large collection of vinyl that they need to play.
But the naysayers may be thinking about the overall cost of vinyl - especially for someone new to it.
Last time I was in HMV, the same album was £5.99 on CD, £29.99 on vinyl.
