    MP3 Normalisation

Quick update for anyone who's still listening ! : MP3Gain runs just fine on Windows 11 PC ( I did the full download, with VB files, from the official site ). It might be long in the tooth, but it was easy to use for an old codger like me - just find an online tutorial. Trialled the default...

    MP3 Normalisation

Thanks for that, Vincent. I may be wrong, but I'm lead to believe that a lot of these levellers simply apply a cut-off threshold, whereas MP3Gain does an analysis of each track to maintain the song's dynamics, then alters the average sound level to a fixed number. This would seem to be a...

    MP3 Normalisation

I've taken to copying some of my old CDs onto a USB stick for use in the car, and I'm feeling quite pleased with myself ! ( I'm 70 in May ! ). Used WMP to rip the CDs, photographed the covers, cropped them in Photo Gallery, resized them in Paint and tagged them as Album Art using MP3Tag. My...

    Non Smart TV

What about the likes of British Heart Foundation's electrical shops ? I believe everything there is safety tested, and most of their TVs are older models which people have chopped in for one of those pesky 'smart' TVs !

Thinking out of the box and saving money.

They just seem less fussy than the multi-tubular efforts of Atacama and others - perhaps the battleship engineering appeals to me as an ex-engineer ! Sorry to disappoint, Gray but at 200mm deep my top plate is only 5mm longer than yours, but substantially narrower at 138mm - they just happen to...

Thinking out of the box and saving money.

I've just realised there is almost nothing online about Atacama N70s, so for those of you wondering " what the hell is he talking about ? "- The N Series were almost identical to the SE Series apart from a narrower but deeper topplate, to suit the'new' monitor-style speakers of the time. ( I'm...

Thinking out of the box and saving money.

Whilst I admire J's ingenuity in repurposing 'stools' into speaker stands, I'm left feeling it's being done for aesthetic or practical purposes, and not to realise any sonic improvements. If I'm reading this right, the 2"thick stands are stuck to the 2" thick tabletop and the speakers stuck to...

    New turntable sir??

Interesting thoughts there, DavidF. Is it possible that all these people buying £5k turntables are also specifying better cartridges/stylii, and using more upmarket amps and speakers ? The more expensive TTs are almost bound to sound better in those circumstances. A more interesting comparison...

    Artist Suggestions Please

Hi W, It seems you may have been raised, like me, on 70s rock, but are also partial to the singing voice. Several years ago I was introduced to Pentatonix ( or PTX ) and was astounded by this acapella group. They sound amazing on a decent hifi setup, the bass especially. Check them...

Sound Distortion - Help Needed Please

Probably finger trouble with the decimal point, but if your tracking weight is really 180g you might as well chuck that vinyl as it will have been trashed !!!

The wisdom (or not) of buying used receivers ?

You are quite right CC - some of these threads on the Forum turn into Chinese Whispers ! I put it down to people reading only the last post of any thread before responding. This OP made it quite clear with their second post that they were talking about stereo receivers, but still we ended up...

The wisdom (or not) of buying used receivers ?

I can concur with MP on the Denon/Mission combo, as my current setup includes Denon DRA-455 AM/FM receiver and Mission 750 LE speakers. Sound fine to me. Given that the Denon was bought 2001, and the Missions in 1999, I'd say kit from that era can still be reliable. The mention of "bookshelf"...

    Very cheap record players.....

Hifiver, I fear you will have to right this off as a lost cause. There are some people in this world who will not listen to reason, despite all the evidence presented to them. Perhaps, having heard your system, he believes any rotary device with a "needle" will achieve the same...

    Very cheap record players.....

It seems to me we have 2 considerations here : 1. Damage to vinyl. Tracking weight on some of these very cheap decks is 10 times that of a decent budget deck, with the resultant accelerated wear ( and this is before we examine the stylus quality ! ). Does he even care ? 2. Poor audio quality...
