Top Ten Budget speakers of all time .

Another vote for the MS20i Pearls from me... Sublime little speakers that belie their budget price. Especially when they can be got for £50 these days.

CAn someone help me set up my new Ortofon OM5E?

That sounds as if you have the cartridge tracking WAY too heavy. The OM5 doesn't normally behave that way - I have one on a spare Dual 505. It may sit a little lower, but no way should the body of the cartridge touch the vinyl. Did you balance the tonearm before setting the tracking weight...

Technics SL-1200MK2 as an audio TT

Absolutely. Agree 100% with Niglet's comments. For me, it's all I will ever need. But for other folks, it may not be. One man's meat etc.

Lots of questions from a TT newbie

Hi there, Firstly, definitely buy second hand - this way if you find vinyl isn't for you, you won't lose much. Cartridges are a little different. Moving magnet cartridges will generally be fine, as the stylus assembly is replaceable - and you should always budget for a replacement stylus. It...

Technics SL-1200MK2 as an audio TT

Yes - totally standard apart from the cartridge. It came with a Stanton concorde-something-or-other which was truly horrible. I've even put an AT-95E on it with really good results. Not as smooth as the DL, but it's certainly very enjoyable to listen to. As always, one man's meat is another's...

Technics SL-1200MK2 as an audio TT

Time for me to wade back in. I use an SL-1210 as my regular deck with a Denon DL-110 cart. It is a great deck, and to my ears at least equals the sound of a Planar 3, and for ease of use blows any belt-drive TT away. It has also been totally reliable. £200 well spent. However. I used to own...

Citronic PD-1 - matching cartridge, headshell?

Hi there, a £7 Maplin Electronics DJ headshell will do the job perfectly, and for a cartridge I would suggest something like an Audio Technica AT-91 from SuperFi at £18. This isn't suitable for DJ-ing as it won't back-cue safely, but as you've mentioned that the main use is listening it will...

    Help with Set Up

You could always go to a halfway house - the Denon DL-110 and DL-160 models are MC, but high output so will work with a MM-input. They are really detailed, excel on timbral reproduction, and the stylus profile manages to avoid a lot of surface noise. I have one on my SL-1210 and it is fantastic.

Turntable advice needed for a newbie

A Rega P3/24 is a very good place to start, and TBH the next step up from that would probably be around £650-800 for either a Roksan Radius V (Perspex - not maple), which is a very modern design and simple to use or a Linn LP12 with Ittok arm, which although capable of better results can be a...

    supex smm5 cartridge

I would replace the stylus as a matter of course - you can't tell if the stylus is damaged until it's wrecked a record. Musonic seem to have them in stock for around £40 which isn't bad, and views on other forums say it compares favourably to modern £70 carts.

Turntable advice needed for a newbie

ajmjcowan:On the basis that vinyl is supposed to soundbetter than CDs Hmm - that's not always the case. I love vinyl, don't get me wrong, but a Debut or RP1 isn't going to worry your CD setup. You are probably looking at the thick end of £1k new or £500+ 2nd hand to pose a threat. Also, if...

    Rega P1 cable fault

Is there any chance that it could be at the phono plug end? If so, it's a far easier fix. The arm end would need a trip back to Rega really.

Wooden body (in rosewood or mahagony), built-in phono - Best budget TT - which one is it?

I may be wrong but I don't think such a product exists, either regarding the TT or the dac/phono pre. It might be possible to mount something like the Rega fono mini inside the case of a wooden-plinthed turntable, but you would still need the extra power supply plugged in somewhere. You can...
