Sony WF-1000XM5 vs Sony WF-C700N: which five-star wireless earbuds reign supreme?

I‘m surprised there’s no love here for the Linkbuds S, which are usually available for about £40 more than the C700N. They are incredibly light and comfortable and sound pretty good, but the biggest improvement over the C700N is in the noise cancelling. I took a pair of the cheaper buds for a...

Q35 or Q45? Looking for good sound and ANC without paying Sony/Bose prices.

I went to see Barbie in the cinema – and now I wish I’d waited to watch it at home

I saw Barbie and Oppenheimer in separate cinemas - not on the same day, thankfully - and the sound quality was appreciably better for Oppenheimer. Barbie, in an upmarket independent cinema, was plenty loud enough but the sound was rather harsh and unmusical. Oppenheimer, in the flagship...

Sonos Beam (Gen 2) Dolby Atmos soundbar

The only easy fix I've seen is to turn off Dolby audio on the Sky Q so the Beam gets stereo from Sky channels and Dolby from broadcast TV and the TV's apps. Is there an easy way to do it without losing Dolby audio from Sky Q?

HMV backs the British High Street, plans 10 new stores this year

Bricks and mortar record shops are an important part of being a music fan, for some of us anyway. But there's a difference between the neighbourhood shops which feel like part of the community and the big chains which feel like they are just part of the Head Office's strategy. Last time I was in...

The 11 best movies on Netflix – April 2020

The article says "Note: not all movies are available in all regions. We've used the Netflix US catalogue, as it's the most extensive, but Netflix in the UK, Europe and the rest of the world may differ." But at the bottom of the page it says the magazine is based in Bath, which has been in the UK...

Spotify Free - unusually free of adverts?

Don't use Spotify very often but today I found it was the only way to listen to a DJ playlist I wanted to hear. The music stopped after the first song. Checked the phone and it was waiting for me to hit play on an advert. After that I got several more adverts before it resumed the playlist. So...

Apple Music lossless supported devices: what will (and won't) play lossless and Spatial Audio, and why

It seems to mean that if you are using AirPods Max, you can get higher quality by using a wired connection but it will not truly be lossless because you have to use a Lightning-to-3.5mm cable not a 3.5mm-to-3.5mm cable. From Apple's support page: Can I listen to lossless audio using the AirPods...

    Sky Q

Hello Rodney _trotter, That thread is pretty damning. I didn't find it before because it's associated with Sky Italia (sky.it) even though it's about the UK broadcaster, possibly because people wanted to create a new thread just for Sky Q. I do agree that the issues with Sky Q should have been...

With Apple and Amazon offering lossless streaming for no extra charge, what now for their rivals?

Deezer just appointed a new CEO whose previous job was in online dating. He's said he's "passionate about music and podcasts". Being passionate about music is surely a good thing but podcasts? A bit worrying. Does anyone pay for a streaming service so they can listen to something that's legally...

    Sky Q

To be fair very few reviews on Trustpilot are of the actual Sky Q box. I particularly liked the one-star review for the "cheap homemade style loosely described movies". The Sky Q system does have some irritating design quirks and many people have had issues with sound dropouts so maybe the...

    Tidal £2 for 2 months

Yes, you have to work out whether a couple of free months is a bargain in the long term, because once you've signed up you're committed to paying full price once the free period ends. I would much rather get a good deal for 12 months than have a free trial period and then pay full price...

FA Cup Final live stream: how to watch Chelsea vs Leicester City for free

Looking at the links in the article it seems these "where to watch" stories are mostly about generating referrals for paid services such as VPNs. As far as I can see they didn't even mention the live stream on BT Sport which showed the match in high quality HDR, which would surely have been...

    Sonos Beam

Funnily enough I like the simplicity of the Beam and how easy it is to stream music. It's the sound that annoys me: yesterday, watching a film on Netflix the music must have been audible in the next street but the dialogue was like a whisper. Surely Sonos must have the know-how to make film...

    Apple Music

I remember reading a blog some years ago where the writer compared the recommendations from various streaming services. If I remember correctly Spotify was uncannily good at predicting which songs the writer would like, even though they had quite obscure taste in music. It would be interesting...
