Many of us still listen in mono either through our smart speakers or phones.

    Question Longevity of HiFi gear.

Do items wear out or does obsolescence shorten longevity of products? Electrical components can change value, lasers in CD players malfunction and the latest technology hastens legacy products. You buy your desired component hoping the enjoyment lasts past its warranty period. My original...

    Amplifier warm-up

I was brought up to believe heat was the enemy of electrical components.

    Amplifier warm-up

Interesting. I run an original Cyrus One and the manual advises to keep it plugged into live mains so the preamp stage is at optimum temperature at switch on. There is no such mention for the power amp.

    The Car Thread.

When insurance companies write off cars they may not go to the scrapper. My son's Ford Fiesta was written off and he was paid accordingly. A salvage pick up came to take the Fiesta away to auction. A few months afterwards I looked on the DVLA website and the car was back on the road. Who is...

Question 3D TVs died before they had a chance to get good – I think it’s time for them to come back ?

Got that wrong. Apparently Panasonic went to passive 3D on their 2013 range of LED tvs and I bought one of those

    Living in a cell.

I knew a guy who 40 years ago had a Cyrus 2 amp and Mission speakers and placed the rather large Mission speakers on their side on a sideboard. Sounded OK to me at the time.

Question 3D TVs died before they had a chance to get good – I think it’s time for them to come back ?

It was doomed from the start as manufacturers persued two different systems. My Panasonic had passive 3D and could be viewed with glasses used in the cinema while Sony and other manufacturers had the shutter format with the glasses need to be battery powered . If only manufacturers worked to a...

    Wow!

A sequence of events. I had the Cyrus streaming via a Sonos Connect. Then my wife wanted to play CDs. I bought a network player which incorporated CD player and Internet radio. Placing the Cyrus on a full width component looked aesthetically wrong so she bought a matching amp so the Cyrus was...

    Wow!

Got my original Cyrus One bought in 1989 out to give it an airing. What a revelation it was last night. I can understand why What Hi-Fi sung its praises back then. Cyrus produced a sublime amp and may I say, perfect. Each note sounded so airy and surrounded by an inky black darkness. Granted it...

Can you tell the difference? I listen on standard quality via Sonos Connect plugged into my amp as its a legacy product. My Sonos Beam and Sonos One plays HD and Ultra HD and Atmos tracks but is no better than Connect and amp combo

    Quiet start

In the office I have a Sonos One and Sonos SL configured as a stereo pair. When I ask Alexa to play music or a radio station the first 10 seconds play at a reduced volume and then the volume increases to the preset level. When I ask Alexa for the weather or the news I don't get the quiet start...
