    Oops amplifier explosion

Don't reconnect the speakers to any amp unless you check them with an ohm meter. They should not show any DC resistance less then 3 ohms if they are rated at 4 ohms and 6 ohms if they are rated at 8 ohms. As for the amp shorting the output stage could have damaged the output stage if the...

Technics A900mk2 right channel cutting out

It could be a dodgy laptop plug or interconnect? Try to see if this happens with other source. Also try to use other input on the amp too, in case one of the input relays is sticking. Also the volume on the amp is motorised so it may be trickier to clean.

Why is there literally no bass? Rotel Preamp, amp, B&W Speakers

I would try another amplifier and drive it directly from the flac and see if things improve.

Little/no sound from the left channel of my amp.

Don't actually think the pm350 has any relays for speaker selection, but if it has you should hear clicking noises when you press the A/B buttons. Relays are used in more expensive amps as they are more durable then a standard switch when the switch is asked to handle a few amps of load as is...

Little/no sound from the left channel of my amp.

Stating the obvious, but if you stack, just wire everything on A to get you going. Also you need to confirm you have relays. This is easy as when you mess with the A/B switch you should hear some relay noises. Relay cannot be easily cleaned with a contact cleaner as they are sealed usually...

What do you think of Class D amplifiers?

Andyjm, Had a look at the DDFA spec and must say at least somebody tried to do digital feedback which is a good way to go. Is this technology perfected. I don't think so. There are two problems I can see. One I already said, you will need a lot of negative feedback to remove distorsion...

What do you think of Class D amplifiers?

Must say have not seen this before but reading it confirms to me my original suspition that class D is a no go for HIFI. The article claims some improvements using their technology but they don't go into detail. However, from what it implies is that they have a technique to apply higher from of...

What do you think of Class D amplifiers?

Looking at the wikipedia page start to feel a bit more unconfortable with the technology. It looks like staying digital untill the end is not a practical proposition as feedback cannot be applied using conventional analogue techniques. (perhaps digital feedback is possible though at a cost)...

What do you think of Class D amplifiers?

My feeling is that this technology needs to be perfected before it takes over from classical amplifiers. The fact that the final stage is the DAC is good in principle as the signal is not degraded in various anlaogue pre amplifier stages. However, we all know how DAC is critical for the sound...

    Understanding speaker/amp impedance.

Strictly if the amplifier is designed for 8ohms speakers will not be safe to use it with 4ohm speakers. This one from Pure as is part of a system with its own speakers may not be intedended to be used with other speakers. Consequently the designer can cut corners and design the amplifier to be...

    A400 service/mod in Kent/SE England

My view is that old amplifier that shows signs of wear is not viable unless you are prepared to service yourself as a hobby exersise. If not you will need to pay someone to fix it for you. Unless your are attached to the specific sound a new amplifier is the way to go. Pots showing signs of...

    A400 service/mod in Kent/SE England

A can of spray should help but requires that the amp case be opened. I understand that that is not an option.

    System suitable for low-volume listening?

As your priority is listening to low volumes you should consider to audicion class A amplifiers transistor or valves. These amps don't suffer from crossover distorsion and can be used at low levels. The valve ampllifier also has got low damping ration which make them very sensitive to speaker...

My first Hi-Fi system doesnt sound quite right

Another worrying aspect of the DC4s that can be even more detrimental then lack of bass is that the reviewers suggest that when driven hard they can sound bad. This is quite possible as the 4 inch speaker can be easily overwhelmed at high volumes. The cone movement needs to be significant to...

My first Hi-Fi system doesnt sound quite right

Let me remake a point I made earlier. DC4 lowest note is 68Hz. Take a simple instrument like a piano. The lowest ten keys make notes below 68Hz with lowest arounf 27Hz. This means DC4 cannot actually reproduce these notes. This fact for some is unexaptable and therefore opt for larger speaker...
