    SME buy Garrard

Agreed, all ears, about the market sector and SME, however, in my opinion they could easily make the Gerrard into a cult deck like Rega have done which would really establish the famous name. Yes, it could be pitched at the Rega higher end. I put a Nagaoka MP-100 on my LP-5 and it sounds...

    SME buy Garrard

I'm inclined to agree with MajorFubar and All Ears, both give good points and I agree re the AT LP-5. There has been a good deal of snobbery over decades of HI FI, mostly aimed at the high end gear, hey, if you have money spend it on what you like, but this snobbery was very evident on review...

    Replacement needles

One Computer review site some years ago bashed the prices of printer ink by saying millie litre for millie litre, Champagne was cheaper

    SME buy Garrard

I hope SME/Gerrard bring out a turntable but I also hope it will be affordable

    Are you Shure....

All, ears, some time ago you recommended the Sure M97XE as an upgrade for the supplied AT95EX on my AT-LP-5 turntable, do you still think the Shure is a good upgrade over the AT95EX for that deck. I don't see much point in spending more! Chris

New better Cart for a budget TT ?

Not sure if my Nagaoka MP-110 ( about £120 ) could be classed as a better cartridge than the AT95E or AT95EX, but my AT LP-5 arm certainly handles it well, I would not consider spending more on a cartridge for that deck,

New better Cart for a budget TT ?

It's horses for courses, a high quality cartridge on a cheap/ish arm will probably never realise its full potential, there will be limitations with the arms design, The TEAC TN300 is a great budget deck and it could possibly take a very modest upgrade cartridge but not by much Having said that...

    Michell Gyro or Orbe

Just a thought, would your Vinyl collection do these proposed systems justice,

Project debut carbon dc ground hum

I had this problem years ago on an old Thorens turntable, and found disconecting the earth lead (green) from the mains plug cured the problem. However, i'm no electrician so I would seek advice on safety issues.

    Is vinyl really for me?

I had similar experiences, my deck did not have Dolby, it was the 4000DS, I eventually found Maxelle wide bias tape worked slightly better but it wasn't perfect. Where the decks realy shone was the recorded voice from a microphone, like in a studio. I had an old Ferrograph, which nothing ever...

    Is vinyl really for me?

I used to record all my Vinyls when brand new on to reel to reel so they were preserved with out all the snap crackle and pop they entually get over the years. I made many compilation tapes of my favourite music this way, agreed, you could buy recorded albums on 1/4" but it was never that good.

    Is vinyl really for me?

My Akai reel to reel tape deck is the best sounding system I have, but its really only as good as the stuff you feed it.

    Is vinyl really for me?

To put a finer point on it, Linn is Scottish or was when I last looked.

    Is vinyl really for me?

There is no doubt that modern equipment has evolved into excellent (well some excellent) bits of kit, but at a price. Linn are a joke now IMHO and equal if not better performance can be had from much cheaper turntables/arm/cartridge combinations. Going back to the original question, any...

    Is vinyl really for me?

I love viynl too, and have done so since the 60's with my Thorens TD 160 deck and a SME 3009 arm + Shure cartridge, and a Creek 40 40 amp, still use it but now have some B + W book shelf speakers. My upgrade path got me as far as the Rega Planar 3 old model with RB 300 arm in the 80's. Loved...
