Why don't you keep the speakers and improve the sub with and SVS SB1000 pro or SB2000 pro? Having a Sub that reaches down to 20hz would be a massive upgrade. The sub can then pair with any future speaker upgrades.

Bought this system for my dad. Had the same issue. You need to go into the settings and turn off the HDMI control. The system wants to work off the ARC first if your tv has it. You then need to change the function on the system to Audio to hear the audio. I spent about an hour working this out...

Tesco extras selling 2m qed hdmi-p for £20 and 1m for £15. I bought 3, thought the picture was much cleaner when using play tv on PS3. I also have the chord active hdmi courtesy of WHF subscription. very impressive too.
