Personally for the sound you're looking for I'd also look at valve, check out PrimaLuna, they make some of the best valve kit going at reasonable prices. I've not heard Quad valves for years, but I suspect they will be very good also.
Hi.
I believe the philips are quite good, but there is also a really nice Arcam unit which sounds good for music (the solo bar) which is worth auditioning. I tend to find Arcam stuff sounds really good and I've had a number of their products before.
Bose have always been good at making a big sound from a small box, but apart from that it leaves much to be desired. I'd have a look at these too http://www.mission.co.uk/product.php?cid=6
My dealer had the A49 playing in the shop when I was in today, it seems nice enough. Typical Arcam sound to me, warm, smooth, very musical. I believe its being made in America rather than China?
Is it a 5.1 or 7.1 system you are trying to produce? That amplifier is a home cinema amplifier, wont compare in quality to a stereo amp by any stretch of the imagination.
I've just come back to the site after its update. Ow dear!!!! What a mess. My macbook pro has a fit loading the front page, and the font is very very hard to read. Sorry if this has been said before and I'm going over old ground, but What Hi-Fi just looks like its totally sold out to the highest...
Hi Andy,
I wouldnt be surprised if the TV (or another bit of kit) is dropping noise onto your mains ring. It could also be some level of DC offset on the mains ring. I'd give isol-8 a ring if I were you, they really know what they are talking about when it comes to this stuff.
You have the speakers to justify the big amp. I've had a few AV amplifiers in my time, and always struggled to find much if any difference in the spec on paper!! However, this DOES NOT translate into audio differences. The components will be of higher quality, they will have spent more time...
I was lucky enough to be in Berlin last week and cought some of the IFA show. Yamaha were there playing the 2100 in a little room they had built, it sounded great.
They were using the NS-F901 speakers, drematically toed in. It was quite a warm sound from the speakers all in all, not quite sharp...
