What to understand before floorstanding speakers purchase?

Hi again Ben, great to hear all your experiences trying to find the sound you're after - not so great the personal issues, as someone who only ever sleeps around 5hrs a night I can sympathise to an extent! I'm lucky in my line of work not to suffer from tinnitus though (touch wood!), a horrible...

What to understand before floorstanding speakers purchase?

Thank you! I try to pop in and take a look from time to time in-case anyone has any questions about the speakers. :) Thank you very much! :) We spend a lot of time listening to try to create that balanced sound in a "normal" living room, we're glad you and your wife have enjoyed them.

What to understand before floorstanding speakers purchase?

We wouldn't suggest using spikes directly on the hard floor as it would mark it, but with the spikes there are some small metal discs to place the spikes on. This will likely improve bass definition and make the treble more precise and "airy". There will be 4 threaded holes in the bottom of...

What to understand before floorstanding speakers purchase?

There should definitely have been some spikes in the box, taped inside the foam end-pieces - they do improve the sound. If you can't find them or for some reason they weren't included and you'd like to try them send me a direct message and I'll get some to you.

What to understand before floorstanding speakers purchase?

Hi, I've only just seen this thread - can I just ask, have you tried putting the spikes on the AE120²'s? It should definitely improve that articulation and definition you're after, they come with small metal cups to avoid denting the floor (could also glue some felt to those if marking the floor...

    Mission 781 speaker rattle

As nopiano says it's worth checking the coil, when you push the centre of the cone in there should be completely smooth movement with no scraping. Other things worth looking at; check the glue around the dustcap, if it's dried out and come away a little it can cause a rattle, take a look at the...

Acoustic energy ae500 match with rega elex r?

Yeah, you tend to end up having to reverse parallel park up the hill in busy traffic, quite fun! :) If you take a right (facing downhill) after you drive past the shop on the right there's often spaces down the side road there too. They usually have a good stock of the KEF and ATC's as mentioned...

Acoustic energy ae500 match with rega elex r?

I'm not sure where you're located but as Nopiano said, many of the Audio-T branches will be familiar with the AE500's and Rega amps so if not too far may be worth a visit (or call at least - they're usually happy to offer advice). We use a Rega Aethos and AVI Lab Series to design the speakers...

    Kef ls50 meta cone cracking

No probs! Ahh yes, the deeper port tuning on the 500's could certainly cause room issues, they go around 15-20Hz lower than the AE1's. Sealing the port with anything will do - we often recommend a sock or rag to test it out before trying something more permanent. Funny you ask that - while I...

    Kef ls50 meta cone cracking

Your AE1's were made on the 2nd of August 1988. Glad to hear they're still going strong! (y)

    Kef ls50 meta cone cracking

I can't comment too specifically on the speaker (being from another manufacturer) but it's feasible for the cone to have been damaged that way in use - you have a powerful amp and vinyl in particular can put out some hefty low frequency information (not always audible) which can really push a...

    Question Stereo system for 1500eur?

Just to give a little info (don't wish to derail the thread) - the new 100 Series is all-new, not a single component shared with the old, they're a little larger due to a change to 5" drivers (we've kept this to around 15% increase in size). It's unlikely there'll be many huge discounts on the...

Are active speakers a good idea?

A choice more than an omission really - which speaker would you aim the remote at? What if they're too far apart so the remote can only operate one speaker at a time? Would you have one remote for each independent speaker or add additional cabling with an umbilical cord between the two to ensure...

Question Knocking on things to define quality (?)

Something we all do to one degree or another I think, I often judge car build by the quality of the door handles as it's the first touch-point! The only problem doing this with speakers is that different manufacturers have different techniques for creating their sound - some prefer thin and...

    Personal speaker "mystery".

One factor in the perceived change in detail retrieval could be the ferrofluid in the tweeters of the B&W's. It can dry and thicken over time, gradually restricting tweeter dome movement, lowering output (and thus perceived detail) as it does so. After 20 years its very possible this could be a...
