In fact it's even better. Blu-ray discs can handle progressive signals (as opposed to TV's interlaced) and have a higher bit rate.
All BDPs will play DVDs, and most probably no worse than your existing unit.

While that IS possible, BDs with that bad a picture are few and far between, so if you're having ghosting on all discs then it's definitely not their fault. As BB has said, switch off all processing, which especially on BD playback is wholly unnecessary anyway. Most likely "digital clean view"...
